Page design and typesetting

This Page Design Gallery includes several examples of page designs in five different categories: Simple, Complex Text, Complex Text and Images, Complex Technical Textbook and Illustrated Children’s Book Pages.

What kind of page design will your book require?

Simple

Simple page design is defined by classic, elegant, minimal design, usually including only a defined chapter head and clean, uncluttered body copy pages. Typically this type of page design is used for novels or short stories which require little to no special text treatments.

Complex Text

Complex Text page design is also defined by classic, elegant design, but the text elements are generally more complex. They require a similar chapter head and body copy treatment as the simple design. But, they usually require special text treatments for things like table of contents, bullet points, call outs, poems, headers, sub heads, lists, etc.. and may include reference materials, endnotes, glossary, bibliography, index or other appendices.

Typically this type of page design is used for Non-Fiction books.

Complex Text and Images

Complex Text and Image page design again should be defined by classic, elegant design, but the text elements are more complex and images are arranged throughout. Here the aesthetics of design, colour, balance and layout become more important. These pages also commonly require special text treatments for things like table of contents, bullet points, call-outs, poems, headers, sub-heads, lists, and recipes, etc.. and may include reference materials, endnotes, glossary, bibliography, index or other appendices.

Typically this type of page design is used for non-fiction books like a coffee table book or a cookbook.

Complex Technical Textbook layout

This type of page design is the most complex. These pages commonly require the greatest amount of special text treatment for things like tables, figures, diagrams, tables, bullet points, call-outs, headers, sub-heads, and bulleted or numbered lists, etc.. Back matter may include reference materials, endnotes, glossary, bibliography, index or other appendices. This type of book could be either a black text scheme or full colour.

This type of page design is used for non-fiction books like technical manuals and educational text books etc..

Illustrated Children's books

This category is similar to the Complex Text and Image page design. Text elements are generally less complex in the variety of text treatments, but more complex in layout, and again images are arranged throughout.

Design, colour, balance and layout are important. These pages often require complex special text treatments. (Note that in this example many of the text elements follow a curving path to enhance the story line.)

Client Love

Adam Gainsburg

I chose Tamian to handle the cover design and layout of my latest book and I am honestly still getting feedback from both readers, and other authors in my sector, about how well thought-out and executed both were. … Tamian brought not only a very experienced design ethic to my project but a clarity and professionalism ... [I] Cannot recommend her highly enough,

—Adam Gainsburg, Author - The Light of Venus
